Remembering D-Day: Jack's story

Jack Smith joined the Royal Marines in 1942 when he was only 17. Two years later he was one of thousands of Allied troops taking part in D-Day.

As a pilot of a landing craft, Jack played a key role in helping British Forces land on the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944.

“As a 19-year-old I was out there with my gun and heard all the noises overhead, with shots being fired.”
